Veysonnaz, Valais Switzerland
Valais, a glorious landscape of summits, peaks, lakes and mountain trails abundant is located in South West Switzerland. Valais or valley of the mighty Rhône, a river born in the heights above Glacier Gletsch and channelled into a stream between the Bernese and Valais Alps then lost in the beautiful depths of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva).
Sion, the capital of Valais, and the oldest town in Switzerland is surrounded by beautiful vineyards. The castles and relics of the historic past hug the Valère and Tourbillon Hills.
13 km from Sion and nestled at the heart of the Rhone valley is the typically Swiss village of Veyssonaz at 1300 metres. A church. wellness centre, a local boucherie, supermarche and croissanterie blend perfectly with restaurants and ski and hiking boutiques.
The skiing
Veysonnaz is linked by an 8-man high-speed gondola to the 4 Valleys, incorporating Verbier, Haute Nendaz and Thyon 2,000, one of largest skiing areas in Europe and the largest in Switzerland. The network of ski trails to an altitude of 3300 metres, caters for all levels from beginners to experts and covers some 400km of slopes and 92 lifts. There are 3 lift pass options, one for Veysonnaz region, a pass that includes all of the 4 valleys and an additional pass that incorporates Mont Fort.
Suisse E’cole de ski accommodates all levels including children and beginners, whilst the vast “ski tour” areas is a playground for snow boarders and off piste and cross country skiers.
Summer in Veysonnaz
Spring and summer in Veysonnaz is nothing less than exquisite. 300km of sign-posted mountain walking trails incorporating the superb alpine irrigation trails known as “Bisse de Vex”, lead straight from Le Preyet to spectacular mountain summits including Monta Rosa.
70km of mountain bike trails, horse riding, fishing, paragliding and climbing is available or simply take a stroll from Le Preyet and take a dip in the local indoor swimming pool at the Wellness Centre, or play a leisurely game of open air tennis.
Golf courses are dotted around Valais with Sion being your local 18 hole course nestled in the valley floor. Seve Ballasteros championship course, home of the Omega Swiss Open at Crans Montana is less than a 45 minutes drive.
Eating In/eating out
Home cooking is easily managed in Le Preyet kitchen. Savour the smells of home cooked raclette and pull up a bench and enjoy your dinner party for 12 followed by board games and a night cap on the balcony whilst listening to the evening silence.
A walk from Le Preyet and you could be tempted by pizza, fondue and local beer at the Pizzeria, or for more formal dining, local restaurants offer a comprehensive menu and local fine wine list. The choices are endless.
Around and about
If you fancy a short day trip, the cool waters of Lac Leman is less than an hour away, with the sophistication of Montreaux and the Swiss Riviera nearby. The famous Montreaux Jazz Festival offers a real musical extravaganza in early summer – sip a cocktail in Harry’s bar whilst watching the sun set over the lake.
Wine tasting in Valais‘s many vineyards is a past-time of the locals – the local wines are one of Europe’s best kept secret.
Arriving at Le Preyet
By road Veysonnaz is 1 hour 40 minutes from Geneva. A train service operates from Geneva to Sion where a bus service can take you to Veysonnaz. Resort. Some airlines fly to Sion airport in winter months. .
